Is there a pattern to when land expansion sales are on? A few weeks ago they were being offered quite often but nothing for a couple of weeks now

They come along every two weeks. The next one is due tomorrow.

Because your city side grows a lot quicker than airport side you need more land for buildings that produce coins and passengers

It's because you're 81st expansion.

They keep getting more and more expensive too. I just bought #99 so I think it goes up to 30 greens when discounted at 101.

Just bought several more plots of land for this event and helicoptors, up to #190. Price is now 70(on sale)/140 greenies.

I can confirm this. After exp 81 for each 20 pcs price increases by 20 greenies, i.e. by 10 during sale

That info isn't quite correct. I am at 255 and it's 200 normally but 100 now the sale is on.

Well in the german wiki there is no explanation above level 200. But it is fitting, 100 per sale above level 200. Maybe.

Seems not, although I do have still a large chunk of airport side to expand so it may increase again.
