How do you learn what gets returned on a gift? How do you know when the return is not the same as the gift?

You need 6×Planetarium. To get 1 Planetarium you have on average to buy 10 Super Mystery Building 2s which cost 65 greens at Duke's discount. That's 6×10×65 = 3900 greens. You also need Super Mystery building 1 to get Training Centers and Astronaut Academies, that's another 3900 greens.
There pretty much is no other use for gold tokens. S planes cost greens to repair, so don't even buy them until you already have Mint/Casino to keep them in the air.
Silver tokens are useful for Grand Hotels (cheaper than upgrading Town Hall at one point), but when you start doing space launches you'll have more silver tokens than you could spend.

There are more uses for greens than just land - you need them to open slots in Repair Base, Reserve Hangar, and facilities producing essential flight items: Catering, Blankets and Lollipops.

Trust me: have 100/1000 tokens ready when the Casino comes out, or you'll spend a year regretting bad decision.

hmm... So Grand Hotels increase population? Seems like I should at least get a Green launch site going instead of filling my land with more money generators. Of course, before I reset my game, I could only start one launch a month once my supplies ran down. So tokens will still come slowly to me.

I was planning on using greenies on building slots at some point.

Uhm, what buildings do you click when you visit your neighbors? You should only click Planetariums. Unless you want to focus on green launch prep, then it's Training Centers.

All I can say is ignorance wasn't truly bliss. Okay, all three launch centers will be built.

One finds out later that removing all coin producing buildings; other than those which increase population or passengers for terminal capacity. Replace them with passenger production buildings if you wish to compete in alliances.

Head is hurting with needing to rethink how I approach this game. And I thought I had figured out how to be pretty efficient about it based on what I saw in the game itself.

It depends on how much time and real money you are willing to spend on this game. For a relaxed paced game I suggest not to rush to the big airplanes, and try to get the 3 stars or even compete the weekly rankings on turboprops and jets. Also begin the space program as soon as possible, it worth it. Some guys here have all these great buildings that drop valuable items for the space preparation and also produce a lot of money. Back in the first days here, I was wondering how @Captain WH Rollins was making so much money everyday only by visits, ... well as @Agent_L said, neighbors with planetariums, Astronauts Academy and Training Centers. Mission Control Center lvl 3 and red pad do the job, but their is no comparison to the other 3, especially Planetariums.
So, scan the signatures of the people here, some guys write these buildings and ask them for neighbors, your space program will take off.

I don't know if this gift spamming works good for you, but I believe that you can put this gifts in a better use here in the forum and also you will have the ability to control what you receive.

With red launches when you complete a collection you get a gold chest that contains gold tokens
