@greensmith Just a not-so-wild guess: iPads have bit larger screens which takes up more memory to handle. That can only worsen problems with running out of memory.
Another one: iPads 2 and iPads mini are still wildly popular, while their counterpart iPhones 4s are long displaced from the market. This means that problems on iPads will an.

So this evening I used a Sky Captain bonus on one of my support games and got these results:
60 neighbor taps (12x5) returned ten Pocket Knife drops.
Ten taps on the Mushrooms in my city returned twelve drops.
Completed one more collection for one Russian Egg building.

I used no bonuses on my other support game and got these results:
60 neighbor taps returned eleven Pocket Knife drops. Thats one more than with Sky Captain.
Eleven taps on the Mushrooms in my city returned 16 drops. That's five more than with Sky Captain.
Did not complete a Russian Egg collection

This tells me that Spy Glass is the bonus to use when visiting neighbors and tapping on your Mushrooms.

Why not iPad?
I'm curious why the iPhone update is out but not the iPad. I thought having the same OS, the two would have pretty much the same architecture.
Any thoughts or conspiracy theories?

No conspiracy here. Usually if we submit iPhone and iPad updates at the same time they pass Apple's review at the same time as well — but not this time. Anyway, iPad update has passed through today, and it's out now. For your convenience, we've prolonged iOS event time so iPad players have as much time to complete it as Android and Windows players. Cheers!

how can you compete in an alliance to get chests, when the top alliances have any where from 8 members to 14 members, which alows them more passengers

Android got such a head start it's impossible for anyone playing iOS to catch up. The alliances at the top will always get more passengers because they have more members. And many of them could even be cheating or spending a lot of real money. There seems to be some policing but not enough.
The Alliance Game is a bad idea, poorly executed. And GI/404 does not seem willing and/or able to fix it.

With the iOS update out, my Waverly huff game used a Spy Glass and A Friend In Need bonuses to grab 50 Pocket Knives. Those knives gave me 46 mushroom drops, enough for six Russian Egg buildings. Also got 50 Magic Mirrors.

I also have seen the same view change on my Ipad 4. My AC world is smaller now. And alas my reading glasses don't help me for obvious reasons.

How I'm approaching this quest:

In many quests, the chance of a drop goes from "very seldom" to "seldom" as the plane gets bigger. In other words, while a Turboprop may give you a "very seldom" chance of a drop, a Jumbo and up may give you a "seldom" chance of a drop. This quest, however, has "very seldom" for all planes.

Flying a Turboprop to Cheltenham can be done in an hour -- or 38 minutes with a Vintage Weathervane bonus. So it makes sense to fly as many of these as possible.
I put my S1 and S2 planes in the Reserve Hangar and sold the rest. I bought twelve Turboprops and started the process. Besides the Vintage Weathervane, I used a Secret Faucet and bought a Golden Dice.

So far, out of 96 landings, I've gotten eight drops. This completed one collection and gave me one Plane of Hearts (which I can't use yet because my Card Hangar isn't completed ... I'd rather wait for gift cards than spend the bank notes).

This is the quickest way, I believe, to get six quest planes. Once I have six, I'll sell my Turboprops, buy Jets and start flying to Chichester. Luckily, I have plenty of Landing Lamps and Spare Wire to accomplish this. Once I three-star Chichester, I'll sell the Jets, buy Deltas and start flying to Lichfield. And so on. If I didn't have enough Landing Lamps and Spare Wire, I'd go straight to Deltas because Lichfield has no item requirement for the flight.
