Backing Up My Airport City Game To My USB Key
Something very unusual has been happening these past few weeks, which I would like to share with those of you who are tech savy, and perhaps may be able to help shed some light on this matter.

This afternoon, Tuesday 9th April, I was unable to find the folder, Airport City Data Folder on my USB key. I created this folder (and named it) so I could copy the 7 folders and 15 files (these folders and files have increased in numbers over time), from my c: drive laptop hard disc to the USB key folder. This is my way of backing up my game in case something happens.

Not for the first time have I had to once again create the folder, on my USB key, and then copy all the folders and files from my c: drive hard disc to the USB key folder.

This has been going on for a good few weeks now, and I'm unable to make any sense of it. I do not know if it is just me, or if there are other forum members, who backup their game, have experienced such a problem. This never use to be the case.

I very much look forward to hearing from you with regards to this.

Regards

I back up my game at least twice a day to a folder on my desktop, then also onto my USB drive at bedtime, but I haven't had any problems with the backup folder disappearing. Perhaps your usb drive has some corrupted areas. Maybe try a new drive?

Did you add tick in the box of Hidden Items before you do the backup and before you put the USB to the computer ?
For me everything work fine no problem at all.

The box of Hidden Items does not have a tick, (it is always unchecked) that was one of the first things I looked at in the early days of this problem. I will wait to see what happens tomorrow. Many thanks for your concern.

I have 38 folders stored on the USB key, only one folder disappears, the rest are where they should be. As far as I can tell the drive is working fine. Many thanks for your help.

Interesting - I was trying to help a friend move their game progress to a new laptop - the old one is broken so you can't run the game but hard disk drive can be accessed, and if I've understood it correctly, you make Windows file system show hidden files, find and copy only files contained in the LocalState folder and nothing from its subfolders, right? After installing the game on the new laptop, I assume you would exit the game, copy the rescued files from the old PC to the corresponding folder on the new one, replacing any existing new files with your backup versions, and pray profusely?

I see a lot of .tmp files, can these be omitted/deleted? Thus:

The idea of course is to get up and running without having to involve GI support. I don't have the Windows version personally to test drive on, so I just wanted to make sure I don't lure them into a dark corner - the pessimist in me sees a situation where the backup version not only is corrupt, but succeeds to update the server files, in which case you can kiss that account goodbye forever?:banghead:

What is the "official" (according to GI) version of rescuing game data after a disk crash or similar disaster?

Just had to do it after major computer crash and given new replacement machine. The easiest option is new game level 3. Contact gi. Tell them the problem. I got game restored in 2 days. Very helpful and fast. Installing new game from back up is more risky than updating old game from back up. Imho.
