To me, this seems to be the closest alternative to AC I found so far.

I copy my post from the SimCity Build it thread here since I cannot move it. If an admin wants to delete it there, feel free to do so.

I've started to play a bit with Virtual City Playground but not much yet. So far, I like it. Here are some first impressions and my understanding of the basics, I haven't read any guides on strategy yet, so I have probably done some things wrong but so what? ;)

You get a city that starts with a garage in the center. In this garage, all trucks need a place, so you need to upgrade the garage step by step as your city grows.
You start by byuing a farm, then a mill and you buy your first truck to drive from the farm to you set to drive from the farm to the mill.
Next comes a dairy and a bakery and you need trucks to drive milk and flour to the bakery.
Of course, you also need residents, so you also build residential buildings, a cinema to entertain them, a mall to buy stuff, a bus stop to get them from their houses to the cinema or the mall, ... For this, you obviously need to buy a bus.
You need to build parks and fountains as well to keep the city's air clean. You can also plant trees for that.
All houses produce litter, so you need a garbage truck that collects it from everywhere and brings it to the recycling center.
Buildings that need raw material like the dairy run out of that after using up their pile and you need to restock it manually but you can do that for free. Production just stops if the building runs out of it while you are not in the game.
Each producing building has a its own warehouse where it can store x items and it stops production when the warehouse is full until the truck comes again to pick up products. You can see nicely how the animation of that building stops then and you might want to upgrade the truck that picks up goods there then but you should keep a balance with the other bu ildings and trucks to keep production smooth.

Another key element in the game is energy.
You gain one point of energy every 5 minutes and can then use it on whatever you think is most important.
When you buy something, you need cash and to then build it, you need energy.
When you buy a truck, you need energy to setup a route for it.
When you upgrade a building or a truck, you need energy.
When you want to move a building, you need energy as well, so it pays to think about which building produces what to keep those related close to each other to keep the truck driving times low. I had not thought of that because it was all new and I'll need to use a pile of energy to reorganize my city. That is why I won't build any new buildings for a while now until I sorted out how to best organize my buildings without having to move too many.
The nice thing about the game is that the energy simply piles up and you do not need to be there right when the 5 minutes are up but can simply build a pile of it for whenever you have time again. To me, this is more relaxing than AC where I was also frustrated because my productions kept moving further back since e.g. catering was due every 12 hours and I needed to be there right then or the next would only come later. You also earn money while you are not in your city since the trucks simply keep driving their routes and earning money for you even when you're asleep.

You can buy slices of land for cash and diamonds and you earn diamonds by completing side tasks and leveling up. There are also side tasks that cost diamonds like "remove a hill" which costs 3 diamonds and then 3 energy but it gives you more land to build on.

You can build monuments like big ben which give you 1-3 extra energy every 5 minutes depending on the type of building. As a side quest, you should buy big ben for a rebated price of 3 instead of 30 diamonts and since it doubles your energy from 1 to 2 every five minutes, those are well spent diamonds.

You can also build special buildings like an airport, a big stadion, a casino, a skyscraper, a hangar, a space pad and so on later but I don't have any of them yet so I don't knnow what they offer.

It can happen that a building starts to burn and you need to extinguish the fire. I just spent 500 coins on that which is ridiculous since I have over 300k already but it stops the production of that building of course until I get into the game to extinguish it. To extinguish it, a red helicopter flew in and threw water on the building - and as my reward for extinguishing it, I can now build a fire brigade. :) There is also the option to use a protective shield to prevent any fires for the next 24 hours but I don't know yet how to obtain this so I did not yet complete the side task to do that with the one I got for free.

Similarly, a truck can break down and you can use a protective shield against that for 24 hours. None of mine broke down so far but after the experience with the fire, I assume I can build a garage once I repaired the first.

I haven't found anything like collections yet but maybe I'm too early in the game for that - or they might introduce collections later - but I can live without them as well.

You can invite friends, either existing, anonymous players or players you know by nickname and send them gifts. I don't have any yet since I would prefer to know the friends I add like I did in AC.
You can send gifts to friends and "with the next update", you can also visit your friend's city. A big bonus is that you can chat with your friends in game and do not need to rely on a forum for that. I do not plan to leave the forum but I would always have loved to have this feature in AC even though the forum offers the option to talk with your friends.
If anyone wants to give it a try and add me, I'm "Phyllo E" since "Phyllo" was already taken by whomever, so that is NOT me.

The game is being developed by G5 Entertainment which somehow reminds me of another company's name ;) and the names of the developers sound Russian, too. I don't know if the two companies are related in any way though.

Here is a screenshot of my still tiny town and yes, you see the trucks driving around all the time, gather products in one building and unloading them in another, you'll like it, @Mia. :) In this view, you see the list of my trucks at the bottom, they even change their looks in this selection line depending on their load, e.g. the third was empty when I took this screenshot.

I waited too long with building my fire station and had some buildings burning when I returned to the game.
As you can see in my new screenshot, I need to re-invest energy to get those buildings back. Different amounts of energy depending on the type of building.
I also have to "decontaminate" every building that burnt down but for that, I only need cash which at this levels seems to be no issue at all.
There is a couple of red symbols on the right side showing which problems need to be fixed currently.
On the right side, you see two yellow roofs and a building wrapped in blue. That needs to be restored with three clicks, one click equals one point of energy. Next to it, you see a sign with a garbage truck on the building with the yellow roof. That means I restored the building but while it was defunct, it dropped from the garbage truck's route, so I need to invest another point of energy to get it back into garbage collection. Obviously, I will only modify my garbage route once I have all buildings restored.
You can also see in the truck list at the bottom that one of them doesn't have a route. That's because the dairy burnt down as well and so lost its truck, another point of energy needed to get that back on track.
I built a fire station immediately when I saw this and also upgraded it when I had the energy for that. This means that now, I have 8 helicopters to fly to fires and put them out immediately. Given the size of my city, that should be sufficient for now. You can see one of the fire helicopters in action at the bakery in the middle of the lower part of my city.
I also rearranged some buildings so that I now have the farm next to the mill, then the bakery and on the other side of the bakery is the dairy, so I have much shorter routes for those productions now.

@Phyllo I am at level 9. I have not figured out what is the key element for this game. Like AC, the key element is the airplane (or flight). What is the key element for this game? dump truck?

I think there is no such equivalent in this game. It is rather a combination of building new buildings that produce stuff and then to add trucks to transport the goods from one place to another, thus creating production lines that start with basics like raw oil, produce intermediate items from that like plastics, then final products like cosmetics (yes, from plastics ;) ) and to finally deliver them to the mall. At the same time, you need to build houses to have a population that you can get to the mall and other places like the fitness center, club and such by building bus stops near houses and then buying buses and routing them between the bus stop and the mall, ...

You need to keep free room to build fire brigades, hospitals and garages since you need enough fire helicopters and medical helicopters to deal with multiple fires or pandemics and garages only cover a part of your streets, so you need several of them to cover them all and make sure no truck or bus breaks down and thus the whole production line collapses.

This is what my city looks like now, two fire brigades, one hospital and four garages. I need more diamonds to buy the next slice of land and then build another fire brigade and two more hospitals to make sure my city will be safe from catastrophes. To earn them, I currently simply wait until my city earned enough to upgrade the central garage since updating that now requires millions and then I jump up a level with each upgrade.

Please add me as "Phyllo E" since Phyllo is not me in this game. ;)

I got dizzy by looking all the trucks running. ;)
I haven't figured out how many dump trucks I need. Or what's rate that garbage is generated from each building :(

I trace the dump trucks while they run. You can upgrade each truck and bus, also dump trucks. A three star dump truck can carry 160 waste and if you click on its icon in the dump truck list, you can see how much it picks up. If it gets close to 160, you might need to get a new one and to take some of the buildings out of the first's route.
You can see how much a building can store when you click on its icon.
I add a screenshot of my whole city with the dump trucks where you can see that the one I track here currently carries 36 of 160,

dump truck.jpg

one of a small house where you can see that it has stored 1 of 20 max currently:

small house icon.jpg

and one of the mall where you can see that it currently stored 6 of 100 max.

mall_icon.jpg

So depending on how frequently your truck gets to each building, it will pick up between one and twenty on residential buildings and between 1 (rather 2) and 100 on commercial buildings.

I have more driving around than I would need but I thought I might use the energy I have available now to get them ugraded and a route set up and it keeps me on the safe side so that I do not need to decontaminate any buildings that became defunct because of more waste than they can store until it gets picked up again.

@Phyllo Can you tell me how far in advance you are planning your moves in this new game? For example, are you already preparing for actions you will take tomorrow? Or is the time horizon more like the next 30 minutes? I hope this question makes sense.

One element I really enjoy about Airport City is making plans for things that will happen days or weeks later. For example I am already producing fruit lollipops for supersonic flights, which I won't buy the plane for for many weeks.

@flyfire:
I'm at a point where I basically just wait to get enough money to upgrade the central garage so that I can level up once more and thereby gain the diamonds needed to buy another slice of land. I haven't found another way of earning them any more since those side quests that rewarded me with one like "get three friends" and such are over already.

Aside from this limitation, I do plan ahead and see that I buy hospitals and fire stations and garages to keep the city safe which is the top priority. Then I also look at the side quests to see which productions become available and which products they require to work. E.g. there is a side quest to build a plant that produces souvenirs but before you can use this, you need to have the plants that produce plastics and glass - which you normally have by that time - and also one that produces colours, so you need to build that one before the one for toys or there won't be any toys produced since you don't have all it takes to produce them.

There are other side quests that need to be completed in order to allow the upgrade of buildings. If I see an upgrade that I think I need, I try to complete that quest first.

Having said that, the level of planning ahead I did in AC is not comparable to Virtual City but I am also sure that you all will be struck by the 100 item limit sooner or later and that this will ruin your plans since all the lollipops you produced will either sit there until you used them up and your plants will produce stuff that you cannot pick up before you got down to 99 again or it will even be lost because the management decides that is the better way to keep balance. I am aware of what free2play said and I believe that he says what he wants to do but he is obviously not the management and needs to do whatever they decide even if his heart bleeds then.

I made several mistakes when I started. As a reminder for AC player, the difference between these two game which may cost you precious diamonds:
1) Latest quest is at the bottom (not at top)
2) Land expansion is not square sized
3) You cannot build on mountains
4) Remove building costs diamonds (this sucks!)

Now I am a little bit bored by this game. In this game, level up is by adding more trucks/buildings and complete quests. You don't get experience from passengers and goods you transported. And to add more buildings, you need expand your city. Now at level 17, I cannot expand city any more because I am run out of diamonds. So without diamond, I cannot expand my city. Without expanding my city, I cannot level up. Without leveling up, I cannot get more diamond. I am in a dead loop now.

You can update your central garage a couple more times before that is at its highest level. Each upgrade costs some millions but you gather millions over time anyway. Each upgrade will level you up by one or even two levels and you'll earn one or two diamonds with it so that you can collect them to buy more land.

My central garage is now at level 19 and so I guess I'm stuck with the same problem you are. I just got a notification that can now upgrade the oil drilling and the plastics plant. So I gained a little bit more experience again but I'm still far from levelling up once more and I would need to level up 11 more times to then buy the next slice of land for 12 diamonds. I'll search for alternative ways to earn diamonds since without them, it's no fun any more. One way is to help friends when they request help, e.g. to build the skyscraper but that doesn't happen too often so the 3 diamonds you earn there don't get you far, either.

Right now, it looks like you can't get very far without investing real money to buy diamonds.

@Phyllo & @flyfire If either or both of you are still playing Virtual City Underground, please accept my invites. My Virtual City is Bit.

Hi @LAX - no, I don't play it any longer since I ran out of diamonds without a chance of earning any more.
However, I found township as a really good substitute game which offers a lot of interaction with other players once you reach level 19 and can join a co-op. I wrote about it here: https://www.airportcitygame.com/threads/township.17271/#post-255204
I find it stunning how much the developers of this game encourage helping each other, you earn money and experience for every "gift" you send and on top, you get a clover leave and with 5 of those, you can play the lottery and win items from the game that you would otherwise need to produce yourself or could not even produce like building materials that come by train every couple of hours.
Give it a try and let me know what you think of it.

By the way: Yesterday, G$ finally contacted me asking for my understanding for losing part of my game and offering me 50 greenies as a compensation. No, thank you, I'm not coming back, especially if you're not even capable of restoring what I had and just offering a couple of greenies that won't get me my Brazilian houses, villas and stadiums back.

@Phyllo Thanks for the response. I haven't hit that point on VC yet, but if it becomes too hard to get diamonds, I too will quit playing it.
I agree with you regarding AC. I can't believe they can't restore your game and greenies definitely won't make up for the items that you can no longer purchase!!
As far as township is concerned, many people have said how much fun it is. I did try it out a while ago, but for some reason it just didn't hook me. Maybe I'll give it another try. Thanks again!!

@LAX For a while, I got greenies by expanding the central garage until I had expanded it to the max and then I just saw no further way of earning diamonds, so I quit. So if you did not reach that point yet, maybe you can prolong your game by still upgrading the garage a couple of times.

Regarding township: Did you reach level 19 and join a co-op? That is where the real fun started for me, until then it was "just another city building game" for me. :)
