Sunday lunch for today - slow roast shoulder of beef, crispy roast saffron potato's, mixed green salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, fresh baked bread and homemade onion gravy - a family favourite.

That sounds delicious. How do you keep the shoulder from getting dry in the oven? Do you roast it in a water bath?

For a slow roast shoulder of beef, it will be in the oven between six to eight hours, it is important to check after about six hours, but no more than eight hours. Beyond that, it will be dry and there will be complaints from family members.

Now we are in Scotland on holiday this week, and in a local pub we had a wonderful lunch - Balmoral Chicken. Its a breast of chicken, sat on bacon and haggis, on top of tatties (mash potatoes) with seasonal veg, and a peppercorn sauce - and it was to die for!

Now we are in Scotland on holiday this week, and in a local pub we had a wonderful lunch - Balmoral Chicken. Its a breast of chicken, sat on bacon and haggis, on top of tatties (mash potatoes) with seasonal veg, and a peppercorn sauce - and it was to die for!

Oh, now you are asking. Haggis is a real scottish tradition and speciality - indeed it is the national dish, and the oldest record of it goes back to 1430. If you read the description, you will not fancy it, but it is delicious. I have to have Haggis in some form whenever I go to Scotland. The nicest description is:-

"Haggis is like a crumbly sausage, with a coarse oaty texture and a warming peppery flavour." Think of a spicy mince, fairly dry.

It is actually a savoury pudding or round sausage containing sheep's leftover bits once the joints of meat have been taken (offal - heart, liver, and lungs) , minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, salt and stock, which was cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach, though now an artificial casing is usually used instead. You really are better enjoying it without knowing!

Dinner yesterday was homemade pickles, chicken breasts and drumsticks, mashed potatoes, and fresh strawberries.

We only get pickles in the summer because that's when the cucumbers in the garden grow. :)

Now, still in Scotland on holiday, and a very recommended and dog friendly deli/cafe had this - its a Buffalo Chicken toasted Tortilla - shredded chicken breast in a spiced buffalo sauce wrapped up with cheese, spinach and salsa, then toasted until crisp. To die for!

I've always wanted to travel to Scotland or Ireland but haven't been able to. The image of the food looks fantastic.

Lunch At Home For Today - ploughman lunch - bread and butter, slice of ham, slice of mature cheese, pickled onions, two boiled eggs and an apple with a cold beer.

Now that sounds nice. Not sure about the breakfast though, figs don't sit well with me LOL!
Yes, I do recall you mentioning this before, and I do understanding, they are not for everyone. The figs were from my next door neighbour's garden.
