Why must planes run in circles?

I'm not sure I get it right from your screenshots but there're general rules in airports that planes follow (and we've tried to follow, as well):

1. All planes should start their take-off from the beginning of the runway, even if it's a small one
2. Obviously, if that runway is busy (and it's busy when the runway lights are on indicating it's either incoming or outcoming plane still around), the plane should go to another runway
3. Planes can't go backwards, so sometimes (for Airport City this means certain combinations of varied level runways and all the planes currently in motion) they have to take the long route
4. As @zoutron and others already found out, we didn't want to do it the 'hardcore simulator' way, so the flight timer starts as soon the plane leaves the stand, and speeding up a flight with fuel returns it to the stand immediately; unless you're hunting exclusively for guest planes, you don't have to watch how they roll out to send your whole fleet away, although it's fun to do!
5. We want you to feel boring and quit the game Come on, really?

Point 4 - With version 6. - if you only have 2 runways, you have to wait for those planes to take off before you can send 2 more. With v7 you can click and send off all your planes, and let them do their own shuffle while you go on to do other things. So even though they seem slow, I think it's actually a little bit faster.

Not exactly true, when I was taking off from CPH on Dash 8 Q400 turboprop, they often started to take off from not exactly middle but somewhere near that point, as Dash 8 400 is notorious with short take-off distance needed.
I remember we stopped on a taxiway near mid of runway and waited for B737 to take off from it and then just taxied on runway and started to take off immediately.

To save time and fuel a red plane (circled in red at the bottom of the screen) would normally take the blue route but in this case the pilot decides to waste both and take a red route. Me wonder why?

Because if there would be more planes in queue taking the blue route would block all following planes, and pilots being the cooperative fellas that they are don't want that to happen (e.g. next plane after red one wouldn't be able to use runway 1 when the blue plane takes off). We didn't have time or resources to do the AI for this thing — it's kind of too much for a casual sim game — so those rules are in place for any number of planes.

My opinion, there is no need animation when planes go to terminal or back to runway, the gameplay and animations of Skyrama is verygood
