Have been playing off and on for 8 or 9 years. Prefer the new format for runways, but it takes forever to gather enough coins to extend your property or upgrade something. If you have any tips for me, I would be very grateful.

Only purchase land expansion with coins until you can no longer anymore.
Only purchase land expansion with green cash (banknotes) when there is a sale on (every other weekend).
Check the forum/facebook every Friday for the weekend code, this will give you 2000 coins and 3 banknotes. Beware the code becomes inactive by the Monday so be sure to check it.
Save banknotes primarily for land expansion. The powerful oil refinery is worth buying too. If you have a lot, the stone castle (passenger building) is worth buying, giving 36 pax/hour.
One of the best ways to make coins is to visit neighbours with planetariums daily. 2 of the collections give 2,000 coins per completion (sometimes you can get 4/5 collections per day if visiting planetariums exclusively).
Another is completing spaceship launches.
Flights is my main source of income. Personally I don't really bother with buildings that produce coins, I focus on buildings that will allow me to send more flights.
Other than that, build an airport that suits your game play, if you play little and often, have buildings that drop little and often etc.
There are many threads that cover pretty much everything on this site, have a nosey around, add some of the long term players, and people will be more than happy to give you pointers.

Another tip:
Don't have more passenger buildings than your planes can carry. I use a simple formula: passenger buildings (in my city) = # of passengers per plane + 10% then the rest is coins, space and adventure buildings.
