I think an in app chat feature will be great to communicate with other players and request stuff. Like FarmVille. You can group chat with everyone in you co op. It would be real useful for launch’s etc. In addition to this forum

The chat feature would require a lot of moderation on the part of GI, something they can't do right now. Otherwise, like all other good things, it would be abused. Not everyone is as nice as those of us here in the forum. Apparently, they did have an in-game alliance chat a number of years ago, but it was "hopelessly broken". As nice as it would be to have a chat feature, I don't see it happening any time soon.

But the launch thread on messenger works quite well for the purpose. Within my alliance we also have a discord channel, which is great
