Lets say all of my land is currently used up and I needed more power. Lets also say I have a bunch of coal stations and I am debating about one of the two options:
1. Replacing one coal station with one Tesla, and not buying land, or
2. Buying land and building 4 coal stations.
At my current level, new land cost me 30 greens per 4x4 space, when on sale. The cost of 1 Tesla is also 30 greens, so there is no savings on greens with either option.
If I were to buy land, the 4 coal stations that I could put into 1 4x4 space provides 240 units of power (4 coal stations at 60 units of power each)
If I were to not buy land and replace 1 coal station with 1 Tesla, I would gain 300 units of power, but since I am replacing one coal station, your net gain of power is only 240 units. That is the same number of power units as the first option above.
So it is a wash from a greens point of view as well as a power point of view given that your land is full and it would cost you 30 greens to expand. If land is cheaper than 30 greens per 4x4 space and your land is full, then buy new land and build more coal stations. If land is more expensive than 30 greens and your land is full, then replace one of your coal stations with 1 Tesla at 30 greens instead of buying land. Obviously, if you have land to spare then build something that does not cost greens.
Before I did this analysis, I did buy 2 Teslas because I had lots of greens at the time. But after thinking about it this way, I am going to fill my airport side with as many coal stations as I can since the coal stations provide the most amount of power per unit of land that does not cost greens. I will replace them one at a time with Teslas as my power demand increases, since land will cost me 30 greens or more when on sale.
