i feel there is no way to come first without the powerful explosive bolts, as i've used many of the other items but they take so long before you can use another one and they are worth so few points. still haven't had a powerful explosive bolt though...hmmm

I came first in my very first launch without using them....it just was that the others did not use the bolts either.

Keep buying the items that you do not have, using coins or cash, and hope someone comes in and helps you in the meantime.
23 hours is still plenty of time.
