Expensive buildings

Most of these expensive buildings didn't exist when I was playing before.

Can someone explain why anybody would bother paying 145,000 for a contemporary arts center when it only gives back 100 coins every 4 hours? Or any of the other very expensive buildings - like the science park, high rise hotel and especially the business center.

I think it was a lazy attempt to spice up the game when they were introduced.
Most had a side quest to build, I don’t know if these still exist (it was a long time ago).
Business Centre, Private School and Courthouse drop items from the CBM collections. Each completion gives a mystery bonus. A lot of high level players with a lot of land build these 3 for this reason alone.
The passenger buildings, whilst expensive, are worth it.

Edit: item drop rates are ‘very seldom’

Well, it's also how often you collect coins, it's not like you play 24/7, right? The Arts Center isn't the best, but you start running out of better buildings at some point. I would also agree that in some respects it's more about just having a fun city. At very high levels, coins are kinda meaningless...

I've done the return on investment calculation on some of these. Assuming you are playing 24/7 it will take over 2.5 years to break even on something like the Science Museum. Sure you get them when you have nothing else to spend our money on, but not to make money

to some players like me it doesn't matter. We must have all the buildings. 145k coins are nothing. Wait til you upgrade to Terminal level 12, it costs 5 million!

I remember. I have done it before. Painful to have to go through the newbie stage again ... ugh

What are CBM collections?

Look in the wiki for casino, bank and mint. It explains
Thanks. But those come from events. I was specifically talking about very expensive buildings that you can buy with coins - like 1,200,000 coins for a business center. What is the benefit/appeal?

edited - sorry, just noticed you were responding to CBM

I think the casino is unavailable anymore. Am I wrong?
Why don’t we see what the Wiki says?

And while we are at it, we can look at the collection that it produces, and see how else the collection can be fulfilled.

And there we go, a full loop back to the original post about why people buy the expensive buildings.

Also if you want to complete all the side-quests you have to have most of the high-cost commercial buildings.

Some players have completing side-quests as a personal goal in the same way some have collecting stars.

Agreed, but those should wait until later in the game I think. It's hard enough to gather coins at the start of the game. I think priority should be given to upgrading town hall, terminal, control tower, expanding fleet, etc.

I'm still less than 3 months in (this time around). Early on, it took forever to get 20,000 coins. Now I can do about 300,000 coins a day (with event boosters though).

Is there a list of side quests somewhere? Which mission comes after which? I think there used to be.

Not as far as I’m aware. Perhaps there is something in the guides? But these change a lot with updates so I think it would be near impossible to keep an accurate list. In particular, new side quests are added for the lower levels.

300,000 coins per day after 3 months... Impressive. I don't think I'm doing 200K per day after 2.5 years.

Thanks. This isn't my first time around though - I was playing from 2012 to 2016. And it's lock down right now and I work from home. I can sit at my desk while I'm on calls and land planes all day with a spyglass from the event.

Most of my coins are coming from 1600 and 2000 point collections from landing planes. Doesn't hurt that the English egg collection for this event also is worth 2000 coins and I've completed it 57 times. I also team the spyglass with fuel additive from the event store along with the vintage weathervane and business class or comfort class bonus.

I upgraded my town hall to 8 last night (950K coins) and was down to under 1000 and now I'm already back up to 110K and the workday isn't done yet.

Once the event is done and I don't have the "free" bonuses, that will go down to about 100k/day.

Once the summer comes and I'm spending time in the garden, it will go down to less than that. I'm taking advantage of this time to grow my city quickly.
