Here we go!

Since Netflix and other pay per view methods, I have practically stopped purchasing box sets.

Similar to my in-game gifting, I struggle to keep up. :) I have a broad interest when it come to television series. My 'to watch list', however, keeps on growing more rapidly than my time to actually watch.

Some of my collection in random order from the top of my mind:

- 'Green Wing' (1-2): IMHO.Hands.Down.The.Best.Ever...:ROFLMAO:;
- 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine': Love it or hate it: for me the best from across the pond!:ROFLMAO:;
- 'Thunderbirds' (1964-1966);
- 'Fawlty Towers': the benchmark!(y);
- 'The Fast Show';
- 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie';
- 'Little Britain';
- 'Blackadder' (1-4): That final season, 'Blackadder goes Fourth' :eek::woot:(y) Atkinson, Robinson, Fry and Laurie are combined magic;
- 'The Thin Blue Line': very memorable David Haig;
- 'The Office' (both UK and US): still can't pick my favourite, Gervais or Carell;
- 'House M.D.' (1-8): or how one actor can make you keep watching (y);
- 'Six Feet Under' (1-5): trailblazing opening theme and nice, dark comedy/drama;
- '24' (1-9): Jack Bauer!;
- 'Dexter' (1-8): Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay is a good read as well (s1 derived from novel);
- 'Desperate Housewives' (1-8): My wife's favourite and actually quite good, nice tone of humour;
- 'Will & Grace' (1-8): a guilty pleasure :);
- 'Grey's Anatomy' (1-10): guilty pleasure part II :);
- 'The West Wing' (1-7): before there was House of Cards (2013);
- 'That 70's Show' (1-8): funny and interesting for an 80's/90's child like I was;
- 'Burn Notice' (1-4): nice and light take on the spy business;
- 'Cougar Town' (1-3): a gem!;
- 'Heroes' (1-4): Good superheroes series before all the Marvel and DC frenzy;
- 'Prison Break' (1-4): after the first season (y) they lost me (n);
- 'Sons of Anarchy' (1-7): still to watch;
- 'Modern Family' (1-3): Verrry good if you like fake reality TV;
- 'Orange is the New Black' (1-3): novel trumps series;
- 'Breaking Bad' (1-5): can't find the time to continue watching :(;
- 'Weeds' (1-5): the soccermom's version of the former;
- 'Pushing Daisies': interesting premise.
- Some grrreat Flemish series!

I know I'm forgetting quite a few other gems...

Right now I'm enjoying 'Black Sails' (s2). Pirate series in the West Indies layered with intrigue. (y)

Having Netflix is poison for the mind: my list never shortens :p. House of Cards, The Blacklist, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Narcos, Deadwood, Marco Polo, Family Guy...:facepalm:

Not even mentioning regular aired series on the telly or what's on my hard drive (The Leftovers! Parks and Recreations! Sopranos!) :confused:...

And definitely not even starting on my film collection... :confused::confused::p

I've only recently finished watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea box set (4 season's - 21 disc - 110 episodes - mid 1960's) - I'd forgotten the first season had been made in black and white.

It was an enjoyable journey down memory lane, so long as you did not pay too much attention to the set changes on board the submarine Seaview. Also Admiral Nelson's desk, in his cabin, kept changing position. You would think the person responsible for 'continuity', on the TV show, would have noticed such a large object, as a desk, out of place on more than one occasion.

I'm currently watching Hancock's Half Hour box set (8 disc's - 37 surviving episodes - mid 1950's) made in black and white. A very British type of sitcom and an acquired taste. Not sure it would translate too well across the pond.

I'm hoping to finish the box set before the start of the European Football Championship in France next weekend, an entire month of live football on the BBC. Also, live tennis from Wimbledon in July and the Olympics from Rio in August - worth paying the TV license for 2016.

As for watching Sgt. Bilko - The Phil Silvers Show box set (20 discs - 142 episodes - 1950's) and Top Cat (5 disc - 30 episodes - 1960's) not sure when I will find the time.

Note to self.... must have more shelf's built.

Regards

If you've never seen it, a GREAT one to watch is Deadwood (Unceremoniously canceled by HBO after season 3).

You need to really pay attention to dialogue though, as the speech is very unique & it's easy to miss some things!

@Wasted Eagle - +1000 for "Thunderbirds"!!! Thunderbirds are go! :D

Yeah, this is great show - if one has guts to digest it. My wife could not stand the omnipresent dirt and filth : )

Well, it was one of the top10 most expensive shows ever. They deserve at least bit of understanding : )

@Captain WH Rollins - It's a very, very, character driven show. All of the actors in it were awesome for their roles. As a Brit, you'll love Ian McShane as Al.

It's also very, very, violent, graphic (Poor Captain Turner!!!) and has quite a bit of sex in it, but it's done in a manner that just rivets you to it. And as I said earlier, the dialogue is such that you can get lost really easily if you're not paying attention.

@Agent_L - Yeah, it was pretty expensive. But then again, it got replaced by Rome, which was also expansive and not as good. HBO still owes me one as far as I'm concerned. Lmao.

But yeah, the "Thoroughfare" was not a pretty place, that's for sure!

I'll have to see if I can find them, but I actually got to go out to Melody Ranch, which is where they filmed Deadwood. Sat in the Bella Union, saw Chinc Alley (Wu! San Francisco....:p ), The Gem and all the other places. It was very cool! I'll see if I can dig them up and maybe I'll post some. :)

P.S. - Never mind about Capt. Turner, he deserved it. But poor Al and the stones. Oy vay...*Still makes me cringe*

Another suggestion would be "Battlestar Galactica", the newer mini series and TV show. it is NOTHING like the original one in the 80's. Very different, but very well done. Great special effects, but again, this is a character driven series with lot of sub plots and twists. Highly recommend it, though it isn't for everyone (Much like Deadwood!)

One more off the top of my head, is "Stargate SG-1". It's obviously based on the movie "Stargate", which is also good. It's just an interesting show, and Richard Dean Andersons Col. O'Neil character has the perfect dry sense of humor. You may enjoy it as well.

Thanks once again for all the information and your recommendations. I will begin my research into TV series box set prices, a large block bulk order always saves money, there are good deals to be had doing it this way.

My initial research shows Deadwood would cost less than £25.00 for the entire box set - when combined with a larger order - this will bring the price down further. I already have Stargate SG-1 on my list, along with Star Trek Enterprise Season 1-4 (love the opening theme tune) - it is still pricey though.

Thanks once again.

Sopranos is another very good one. It can be expensive, and there are things like Netflix and similar services nowadays, but it's cool to have them. Enterprise wasn't too bad, I liked it. Love TOS, movies 1-6), TNG and their movies as well.

Another good choice is MIB 3. I think it's the best one in that series myself. It's one of the best impersonations of Tommy Lee Jones' character you'll ever see. :ROFLMAO::LOL:

Being somewhat old fashioned, I do prefer to have items I've purchased I can hold in my hands and see sitting on my shelves. The same with books, cd's, vynyl etc. The younger ones amongst us flyers downloading films, music I do understand the modern day attraction and ease of the process - thanks for your further film suggestions - I'm planning a large bulk order at some point soon.

I also was all after saving everything. Have nice box on the shelf, or at least save a copy of what I downloaded. After many years and moving to new homes I realized that I almost never returned to anything, simply because new stuff is coming faster than I could watch it. I decided that hoarding applies to data as well, so I got rid of everything. Things are just weighting us down, it's the moments that matter and they can't be saved for later at all. Carpe diem, age has nothing to do with it : )

Good Morning, Afternoon and Evening Flyers

If you have recently seen a really good film at the cinema, or purchased a film on DVD or purchased a DVD boxset of films or a DVD TV series, and you would recommend it, I would be very interested to read your posting. I'm always on the lookout to add to my ever growing collection which spans more than thirty years.

My home library of films on DVD and video tapes (yes, rights correct) covers a broad spectrum of genres - westerns, back and white film noir, drama's, war films, sci-fi, epic swords and sandels, comedy, cartoons, slipstick, silent films, suspense thrillers, TV series etc.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Good Morning Film Buffs (11.45am GMT London)

I've recently finished watching all 142 black and white episodes of Sgt. Bilko - The Phil Silvers Show - Box Set.

Although the TV series dates back to the mid 1950's, I found it far from dated. The entire series stands up extremely well, the quality of the writing, across all the episodes, is of a very high and consistent standard which has lasted across all of these years.

I'm also pleased with the quality of the boxset's artwork, the notes and the accompanying series booklet. Its been put together with great care and attention to detail.

I would very much recommend this TV series to you the reader. It would make a fine addition to any film buffs collection.

Nice to see you around @Captain WH Rollins!

With regards to the Deadwood TV Series which you recommended a while ago - I've only now been able to look into this. The many reviews I've read are pleasing and I have a good feeling it will be money well spent - £12.00 for the complete box set is equally pleasing. My thanks for the recomendation. I will order this later in the month.
