A interesting selection of new cinema films to keep both your eyes open for, during the next week in April:

Wild Rose (15) - rising star Jessie Buckley gives a funny, charming and star-making performance in this story about a young mother from Glasgow, dreaming of a life in Nashville.

Red Joan (12A) - this film is based on the extraordinary real life case, Judi Dench is the seemingly unremarkable pensioner arrested for a past of trading secrets to the KGB.

Loro (18) - Toni Servillo creates an extraordinary performance as one of the most audacious and slippery politicians of our age: former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The Sisters Brothers (15) - from Rust and Bones' Jacques Audiard comes a darkly offbeat reimagining of the Western.

mid90s (15) - Jonah Hill’s directorial debut resurrects the ever-summer of mid ‘90s Los Angeles in an after-school special of half pipes and self-discovery.

The White Crow (12A) - Ralph Fiennes directs this ambitious biopic of the Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, whose defection from the USSR to the west stunned the world at the height of the Cold War.

Happy as Lazzaro (12A) - Winner of Cannes' Best Screenplay, Alice Rohrwacher's third feature is an anachronistic tale of one young man's irresistible joy and painful naiveté.

Those of you who enjoy the film noire genre these two films are fine examples Double Indemnity (1944) and Sunset Boulevard (1950) - they are both listed in the American Film Institute's list of 100 best films of the 20th century - I would recommend them very much.

Open Range (2004) - a western set in the 1880s, about four men who earn their living by driving cattle across the plains. They come under threat, when the local cattle rancher, warns them to get off his land. The scene is set for the films dramatic gunfight between the empire-building land-owner's hired guns and the legal free-grazing cowboys. A very strong film with flawless performances from all those in front of the camera. I would very much recommend this film.

This classic British sitcom is somewhat of an aquired taste - The Tony Hancock BBC Collection (8 Disc Box Set - 1956 Black and White) - the box set contains Tony Hancock’s television work, with 37 surviving episodes of Hancock’s Half Hour still in existence (there are 17 episodes considered lost) - this is a box set I often revisit, and I would very much recommend it.

There are many great films which have stood up to repeated viewing since they were first made. I would very much recommend the following, as a wonderful example. This award-winning science fiction film, Gravity (2013), was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, and won seven including Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Original Score. Also Golden Globe for Best Director and BAFTA for Best Director and Outstanding British Film.
