Good uses of event currency:

Fuel Additive, if you use more fuel than you generate.

I also personally like the repair set and items set as they just give you a boost.

I don't bother with the buildings as there are better buildings to put in the space I have.  You could get buildings and replace them with better buildings latter, as you get them.
