Charles - find what gives  you the greatest pleasure and do it as often as you can.  There is no right or wrong in this game.  Each game is personal to its owner.

The fact that you ask the questions that you do means that you are evaluating options - thinking strategically.  That is perfect.  Experiment.  Try a space launch. Fly some helicopters. Sell a plane.  Buy another one.  See what you enjoy.  Its a long term game and you have complete control over how you use your resources. 

Set yourself some objectives and focus on them until achieved.  Then set some new objectives. Your game will develop very nicely.

Most importantly, don't worry about it - its supposed to be fun.
