Is there any advantage to these flights that you have to drop coins for? All I see is that the flight times are longer.

The advantage is that you get to:
1. Chill out and live your real life in the 6 hours or so your planes are gone.
2. Replenish flight items in the period that you will be 3 starring those destinations.
3. Once all the criteria is met you get rewarded with a collectible item dropping building.
