I believe the key to getting the most from the gold coins is setting objectives. For example - I want to fly more aircraft, so I upgrade control tower, acquire land and build (e.g. 6 square house) passenger buildings to supply additional flights. Then concentrate on saving and spending for that only. Once done, set a new objective.

I have finally reached the stage where I do not worry too much about gold coins. It only took me three years to get there, but that was only with the help of some real money spent buying green cash to buy more land - currently 140 greens (70 during land sale).

My support games are only at level 50 after 2 years, but those games are “no spend” games. So if you are playing the game for free, it could take you a lot longer. 😮
