when rooting though does it not wipe your phone 1st so ideally need to back up 1st as there is no sd card in the galaxy nexus

i just need a microscope, just aquired the globe, got 2 of all the others from about 20 flights so im actually quite surprised so far also got 2 items in the other 2 collections from collecting from ppls uni's, cant see me completing the task though if im honest

totally forgot about this, anybody care to share any thoughts i have thought about rooting my phone, but if i do, would it mean loosing all my app/game data even if i backed it up 1st? thanks
