I think most of us have all but abandoned the helis that so many people requested. Clearly they need a re-vamp, and some significant changes. Besides the "ease of getting stars" (which I don't really care about), what are some suggestions from you all in terms of making helicopters fun and viable again?

Incorporate them in the Events (y)
More / new Collections, e.g. space collections
Adventure / Maps
i.e. Incorporate the heli flights more in the daily game; currently the heli's are more a stand-alone part of the game and the heli-flights are only marginally incorporated in the rest of the game.

But I think that will be a burden more than anything else. The method of flight needs to change first. They just aren't very economical at the moment.
Airplanes are not very economical at the moment either. For instance, I just purchased a pharmaceutical lab for 1M and need to purchase a Condor-plane for 1.5M before I can even start flying Condor-destinations. It will take a whole lot of flying before I will be start making a profit out of flying Condor-planes ;) I never really understood the point of "not being economical".

Well I guess it's just the cost of doing one flight. I see your point about the condors, but I guess I look at that as an upfront cost....an investment mind you. Also, once you make that investment, you dont have to really worry about it again....plus you get flight items from it. With the cost of helis, you will always be putting in more than you get out, as you'll eventually run out of required items. It also takes a lot of time if you have a lot of flights going at once, especially with goldfinches. It just seems a lot more painful than it's worth.

Very true, except for the statement about always be putting in more than you get out. Taking into account collections and the buildings you can get, add an occasional Sky Captain bonus, and don't forget about the flight-items that drop occasionally, and you can certainly make a profit out of flying helis. It's just that it's a different method of playing the game. It's intrinsically different in the sense of low flight-duration and the requirement for the items for every flight, and to be honest: It's that part of the heli's that I like.

For me the reason I put my heli-activity on a low is the fact that the heli's are hardly incorporated into the rest of the game. I 3-starred all destinations (except the Goldfinch-destinations since lvl3 heli-repair-base is quite expensive and it didn't get priority from me just yet), so there is nothing for me to gain anything anymore from the heli's. For planes, there's always something to fly for: Events, space-destinations for space-collections, alliance-destinations, map-destinations, etc.

The biggest gain truly may be the flight times. If hunting stars is an objective, then certainly helis have their use. I guess for now, I just don't have the patience for something that just isn't as rewarding. I'm sure they will eventually be incorporated into events, as Im certain they're aware of their lack of use.

I'm really frustrated about the helicopter thing because of the next thing..
1st flight to Jaya I need 4 landing lights and 2 wind cones. 2nd flight I need completely different stuff. I just want to keep producing the good stuff so I can go on getting stars. Now it's everytime a secret what my next flight will need...

Agree that it's a nuisance, but you can kind of get around it by replacing everything that you've used. It's annoying though I agree. To me, the constant cost of flying is my biggest stint. I can't accrue money when I'm constantly flying helicopters, as the cost never ends so long as you're flying.

Please DON’T!
The design is so wrong! Too many procedures, too many factories, too many dependencies between processes

I agree 100%. Dont. They ought to be seperate activities. They are in a real airport! Maybe different targets etc but not linked in with regular alliance flights
Think she meant events. I dont expect them to be mixed in with Alliance missions, as that is already a can of worms as is.

My point is the shouldn't be mixed with anything. They are standalone activities .
I prefer that also, but I could see it being an event in the future, or a task in an event. Kind of like how the blue launch is a part of the "It Came From Outer Space" event. Most people don't do blue launches anymore unless they are after space monuments, so it might be possible that helis will get the same treatment with a future event.

Hmm that's quite a good idea! I try working in front, but after 4/5 flights I'm always out of stuff.. Might try this solution! :)

But for a blue launch you only need 1 MCC, 1 blue pad, PERIOD. You can gather your resources elsewhere.
With helis you must have factory X, which can produce items A,B C or D, which in turn will be necessary to produce items T, V, U and Z on another factory W. You must constantly produce all those items, and in large quantities! You need a lot of space on your airport side, to accommodate several units of X and W, but also on your city side, because the pass producing buildings are not the same you use for planes!
I HATE it! It has the same philosophy as some other games from GI like transport empire

What you may want to do is make a sheet that shows how many of the small items it takes to make the bigger items. Then make a list to know how many varnishes, sprockets, microchips, and spark plugs it takes to make the biggest items, such as a swivel or a plate. Then you will truly know how many of each items you need, and their subsequent cost.

Funny you say that, i did that yesterday as i havent 3 starred all heli destinations. The first level is easy. For 50 of each item emergency parachute, swivel bearing etc you need 150 of each base item. 150 microchip, 150 varnish etc. That calculation is easy. The pain in the preverbial is the next level for the flights. You dont know before you send the last flight off. Bet the maths is not as eay as the first level.

....and this is exactly why this thread has the title it has. It's currently too cumbersome. I think it would've been fine if it was just two levels of items, but things get extra complicated and costly once you get a 3rd level involved....and the issue is that the 3rd level still requires 3 or 4 items. That's a LOT of items from the lower tiers and money for just one flight. And to make it worse, it changes each time...and takes time to replenish lost items. Way too time consuming and costly with its current configuration. If there was a huge advantage with doing one flight (amazing drop rates for all items for example), then it would certainly be worth it. To me, stars and faster flying times doesn't cut it in terms of benefits.
