Keep in mind that some geometrically nice looking dense layouts may actually look terrible in reality )))

It doesn't really look cute in reality but it's functional and I save the money I'd need to spend on more land to make it look nice, e.g. by using streets that are actually streets and not just spots within the city. ;) For the time being, I don't see that I'll have excess cash or greenies, so I'll have to stick to the functional design. I won't win any kind of price for "best looking city" anyway, I don't think that even exists. ;)

Actually, I think it doesn't look that bad but that's something everybody will see a bit different and that's fine with me. To each their own, this thread aims at getting the most out of the space you can afford, not at gaining beauty prices. ;)

GI actually had a contest for the nicest looking airport city a couple of years ago.
A member of the forum actually won the 1st prize - an iPad.

Yeah, it actually looks neater than Madlen's city, and the diagonals are easy for clicking
I still use it for convenience even though Mints gave me more land that I can use for now.

The funniest part? I don't even tap them in place, I move them back and forth into one spot with concentrated bonuses...

I can see where you do that in the picture. If you have the room for it then why not. I know that there are a few people that do that. Looking at what you have there it appears as if you could almost double each building with the correct placement of concentrated bonuses. I guess if you could double each buildings output it would take longer to collect passengers but it would be the equivalent of having twice as large as a city. I will have to play around with this a little and see what I can come up with.

I am going to have to compare your diagonal layout to the best layout that I could make. At first glance it looks as if it would be the same for the amount of buildings that you can place in the city area. However, your diagonal layout appears to be much easier to selectively click the 1x1s if you used them in place of where your trees are.

I will let everyone know once I figure it out.

One of the things I try to do is to maximize my bonuses. I have extra land currently, so my city has several "pods" built around structures that give them bonuses.

For example, here's basically how I build around a 2x2 that extends 2 out. For the Tree of Life it doesn't require a road, but some like the Serenity Garden do (for that I just shift the center ring by one clockwise). So for this setup everything gets the 10% bonus.

Pax layout.JPG

I really like the 2 3x3 buildings I have, the Steel Skyscraper and House of Dark Shadows. Because they are 3x3 and extend 2 cells out I can put snowmen in the corners adding another bonus on top. So everything except the 4 miscellaneous buildings get +10% and another +5% on top. For the Steel Skyscraper it is 440 + 93 coins per day, a 21% bonus (Also affected by the 1% from the Card Castle).

3x layout.JPG

For me this works now, and of course in the future I can try to fill in the outside road border to get better density. As I currently need coins for upgrades, and have just started doing my Adventure flights, I have time before needing the room.

What I can see in your city is that your coin producing building don't sync with your pass enger buildings. Based on your pass buil. you are in the game almost all the time. So you shoul havr coin buildings that produce coins in faster turnarounds. You will get more coins at the same time. You even have buildings that produce small amount every 8 hours. Don't go over 1 hour for any building. Use bushes and monuments to get better income of passengers per round (for small building 1 bush is enough, second don't have the effect.

My general layout is not meticulously planned out like some posts in here but I love my passenger bonus spot.
I spent some real money on metro stations of course but I currently get 180% bonus on my 2x2 buldings.
It helps a lot :D

If you're referring to The Collector, then it gives over +100%. (with few buildings that must be bought for real money). It's not a space-saving feature (it takes frigging 8x8!) but it's for increasing passengers, as I fly Giants now.

I am going to have to compare your diagonal layout to the best layout that I could make. However, your diagonal layout appears to be much easier to selectively click the 1x1s if you used them in place of where your trees are.
I added the trees before I started The Collector and they kinda stuck, but this layout can be compressed a bit by removing the trees. You can't put 1x1s there, there is no road access in that places. (1x1s IMHO are generally unimportant, and you shouldn't have many of them if you care about efficiency)
If you take this layout sans trees then it's guaranteed max efficiency for arbitrarily large city. The only issue are the inevitable loses at the edges, so the question is if your city is big enough to overcome those.

As for buildings other than 2x2, the only one that you must have is the 3x3 Town Hall. the only other would be Multi-Story Building, and it's not worth to mess up your layout for only 6 of those. As for 1x1s, the only viable are the Cottages, and only if you can place them around a tree, because then it's 12pax every 2 minutes. Sometimes it makes the difference, but for limited space and/or population, I'd give them up as well, so that's no 1x1 buildings at all.

@Fencat that radius-2 metro stations in first line are not using their full potential. Replace one Labyrinth with 5% tree, put 3 stations behind it, and replace them with 3 more 5% tree. This should get you 10% more.
Corners are where you can put most : )
One could theoretically use up to 20 stations in the second line alone. Oh, my wallet hurts! : )

I had seen some posts where people were talking about moving passenger buildings before collecting. It never really dawned on me until a few dats ago the value of it.

The tree of life has a 10% and radius of 2. I was getting close to double the value just in the few minutes of playing with this idea. Now that I see what you guys are doing it is a no brainier. Sure, it might take 8x8 or whatever but you have realistically doubled your city's passenger production.

I have found the value of the trees next to the cottages. I wasn't using this technique and I needed everything I could get. Now, this changes everything.

I will try to master this over the weekend when I have more time.

@Waterman981 i have not played around with the bonuses like you have shown either. So many new options to explore.

I had planned to change out the corners eventually but didn't think of this option to squeeze out a bit extra until then, thank you very much for the tip! (y)

New version with 190% bonus courtesy of @Agent_L :D
(could squeeze in a couple more 1x1 for a bit of constant bonus too)

@Phyllo , if I can make a suggestion for your airport side, I would bring all of the hangars to the southern end of area and move everything with a BLOODY GREEN ARROW above it right to the top/north eastern edge. It gets the green arrows out of the way and is far less annoying.

I do the same with my Town Hall. "Go on, in the corner!! You are unwanted and a nuisance! No, further.. all the way, as far as you can. and stay there!!" :D

Edit for a side note: I also tend to put my important buildings and quick producers closer to the city/airport boundary and the dead wood/slow producers further away. It makes for a lot less scrolling. Not a huge issue on that size, but it will be later.

I put them all in the middle between airport and city side with mc2 at the bottom that will be upgraded to mc3 next and then that arrow will be gone, so I can live with them.
Currently, I would not need to scroll at all if I would not have to scroll back to my favourite position every time I accepted a guest plane or accidentally clicked on land to buy which both cause an unwanted automatic scrolling.
I tried to group the buildings in a way that I can click on all that are ready after the same amount of time since they sit next to each other. Didn't work with all due to using all the possible space but I'm content with it.

I also like a bit of diversity, so I'll keep the buildings that are not paying me that much but I bought them due to tasks or got them through collections and now that they're paid, they earn me money without needing any. If it is less than I could earn with somewhat better buildings, I can live with that and enjoy a less monotonous view since there are more different buildings.

I completely understand. I'm lucky enough to have been able to get a nice chunk of land so I can pretty things up a bit. Without that luxury, I would have almost no coin producing buildings these days. My city side is split completely with pax buildings and coin buildings completely separate. Each has completely different mindestes. Pax side: gimme everything you can and more! Coin side: (apart from buildings that increase population limits) for no reason whatsoever, other than it tickled my fancy early on, one of everything. It makes for interesting viewing for visiting neighbours to see the diversity of what the game brings :)

Very similar here. I find as I get more adventure buildings, the coin producers are either being sold or put in the warehouse. I can manage 4 more plots of land next week (60 greenies sale price), and will do a bit of rearranging, plus purchase a few more passenger buildings. Still need 2 more apartment hotels and 4 condominiums, and I think I will have 6 of everything that can be purchased.

Wayyyyyyyyy to go for me... ;) But that's part of the fun of it, there are always new goals to reach.
